I saw it for the first time in high school. Should have seen it sooner.

The television premiere on ABC in 1980. I was 5.
- It is as if God created Smikes, and gave him...
1975 Downtown Joy Theater on Canal Street in New Orleans. Again and again that summer also at Lakeside Theater 4 and the Plaza 4. Like we say in Nawlins... ain't dere no more!!!
I can't remember exactly the year but since I was only 5 in 1975 I doubt it was then.My guess is it must have been about 3 years latter 1978 when it must have been re-released due to Jaws 2 coming out that year. For you youngsters out there before the home video market existed films like Jaws were sometimes re released a few years after the original run.Anyway I saw it in Brighton Ma.with my brother at a theater that has since gone out of bussiness. I remember That it scared the bejesus out of us. It is the perfect summer film.I can't think of any film this summer that I even want to see. Just because their called "Summer Blockbusters" doesn't make them good. They just don't make them like Jaws anymore
In 1978 at a local theatre, which I can't remember the name of. I was four and went with my dad, sister, and uncle. What I know is that my sister was terrified and had a fear of sharks until her adult life. (the kind of information that a little brother loves to have when tormenting an older sister).
I on the other hand, have had a fascination of sharks ever since. It led to me gaining the nickname "Mark the Shark" from my family. Great strolling down memory lane.
age of about 6 i think i was having dinner and we was watching it on tv when the head came out of the boat i lost my food appetite after that LOL
I was ten and my dad took us to the drive in to see it. I loved it! I went two more times that summer and this movie has stayed with me always.
First saw it on a re-run at a cinema in approx 1980 (I was about 8 and the film was already legend among my class mates - due to all the parents having seen it).
It was shown for the first time on tv about 6 months later, but I'm glad i saw it on the big screen, as that is the greatest cinema experience i have ever had
Oh yes, and when the head popped out I jumped a foot out my seat 8O!!! - it will live with me forever
Summer of 1975, I was 8 years old. I still remember turning my head away during the scene when Quint gets eaten.
When I got home from the theatre and went to bed, I was literally frozen with fear because I had the crazy idea that the shark was swimming around my bed. I stayed liked that for over an hour before I finally gave way and feel asleep. Interesting considering I lived on the third floor of an Apartment building.
I saw it in the summer of 75'...It was so packed, there was literally a line around the theater...I believe JAWS coined the phrase "BLOCKBUSTER" for that reason.
BTW...I couldn't swim the rest of the summer, even in a pool !!!
I'm not sure when I first saw the entire film. I read the book in 1975. I was 5 years old. I was so desperate to see the movie but my parents would not take me. They wouldn't even let me read the book but I started reading it in secret. They caught me when I was almost done and they gave up and let me finish it. When it was first on tv I tried to watch it but every time Ben Gardner's head popped out, I decided it was time for bed! I finally psyched myself up and watched the whole thing and I've been obsessed ever since. I've been watching it at least a couple of times a month my whole life and I'm 40 now. Ít's amazing how someone can find such comfort in a 25 foot rubber shark.
PS I saw it a couple of years ago outside on the waterfront here in Toronto. There were sailboats going by and ferries. We were across from the island, it was a beautiful summer night, and JAWS was playing on the big screen. Perfection.
Hey everyone I have a question. In my previous post I mentioned that I saw Jaws when it was re released in 1978 due to Jaws 2 coming out. This was just a guess.I can't remember the exact year I saw it I know it was not 1975.Can anyone tell me if Jaws was in fact re released in 78? If not perhaps you could tell me the first year it was re released in theaters. Thanks.
It wasn't summer of 78, cause that's when Jaws 2 came out. It wasn't summer if 77 cause that was Star Wars. I want to say it was Spring of 79 around March or April. It could of been Spring of 78, but I remember the Star article and 20/20 special and I believe that was around April or May of 78. I don't remember Jaws being in theaters at that time.
Thanks KC Sunshine. The reason I thought it was 78 was because I know I saw Jaws 2 during its' original run in the theater. If it was 1979 that means I would have have seen Jaws 2 before Jaws wich I don't think I did.I don't think it was 79 because that is the first year it was on TV and I had seen it before that.I realize this whole thing is rather trivial but I am just curious
It also could of been re-released twice, 78 & 79. Or it could of been 77 & 78 not necessarily during the warm months, but during fall or winter. I want to say that Jaws 2 was re released also in 79. It's vague. I remember seeing the re-releases and at which theater. But I'm fuzzy on the timeline.
Jaws 2 tagline during it's re-release was... One good bite deserves another! With the 2 original shark drawings/painting swimming up!
I found this article. Which says Jaws was re-released multiple times between 76 and 79. Also other statistics!
Kc Sunshine.Great article thanks again.I am convinced now it was 78 when I saw it.I think it might have been re released in the spring of 78 to sort of get people excited about the upcoming release of Jaws 2. As a kid I loved Jaws 2 I never thought it was as good as the first but I still liked it. Now I don't really like it at all. There really should never have been a sequel. I think the sequels have in someway tarnished the reputation of Jaws. Often times I think people clump together all the Jaws films and look upon them as they would any other horror series. The original is much more than a horror film.I did not realize that Speilberg was not nominated for a best director Oscar as the article indicated. That is an absolute disgrace.Jaws could have been an absolute disaster had it not been for a great director.Did they they think this film directed itself? Jaws lost best picture to One flew over the cukoos nest a great movie but not nearly the cinematic acheivment of Jaws.
I like Jaws 2. I feel it's still a very enjoyable movie to watch. If you don't compare it to the original, it can stand on it's own. Jaws 3, I liked it but was disappointed in all the fake graphics and pacing.
Jaws the Revenge, I was very disappointed when I saw it in the theaters. Since then I've watched it again, even though it went in a lot of wrong directions. I can accept it for what it is.
