Hi! My name is Mike and I've been a "Jaws" fan my whole life. I was born in Boston and grew up in Cape Cod; I spent majority of the 70's and 80's traveling to places like M.V., Block Island and Nantucket and basically living in the water. I still remember to this day the scene where Hooper jumped in the water to investigate the partially sunken boat and when the head popped out of the hole both me and Hooper screamed, but only I went screaming down the aisle : ) After that movie both me and my sister refused to go swimming in anything that resembled an ocean and, to a greater extent, my sister even refused to go swimming in our pool. It took a full year to get over that particular phobia, but living in Cape Cod you can’t stay out of the water forever. To this day I never looked at the ocean the same as I did before this movie. I still love the ocean and I enjoy scuba diving and all that junk, but there is still that little nagging fear in the back of my head every time my big toe touches the water of the that scene where the Kintner boy on his yellow raft and then … queue the music and.... well, you know the rest.

Hey Guys,

I was following your discussion and after reading the web-site below- it really becomes clear how little of a chance Jaws had of winning the Academy award for best picture. The academy has budged a little bit over the past 20 years with regard to action movies and fantasies winning the Oscar, but, it still loves epics, serious dramas and dramas about social problems. When you think about it, One Who Flew Over the Cukoo's nest was right up the Academy's alley- particularly during that time period. I think Cukoo was a well acted and interesting film, but, I will go down swinging in my argument that Jaws was a better adaptation of the book than was Cukoo. People just took Cukoo more seriously because of its message. Jaws was the better movie in my opinion. Guess it depends on your definition of "movie"- should the perceived quality of a movie be based on its message? If so, how much should the message count? Anyway, here is the link below that exposes the bias of the academy:

Glad to have you on board, Mark. I'm sorry, we only allow one Welshman on this board at a time, so I'm afraid you and Kahuna are gonna have to duke it out in a battle of beer pong...

Seriously though, Jaws 3 is my favorite of the sequels- for sheer popcorn value you can't beat Simon MacCorkindale getting eaten alive from the POV of the inside of the shark's mouth, Lea Thompson in a bathing suit, the biggest and meanest-looking of all the Bruces, and who could forget "Daddy! Look at the big fish!" It's been a subject of some debate here over the years, but I consider it to be the best of the sequels. Nice to have someone else on my side for a change.
As for Cruel Jaws, I don't know if there's anything about the film that ISN'T a ripoff! I'm surprised they didn't try to make the word "cruel" really tiny in the title like the video game "shark JAWS" did.

It’s no surprise a film about Afghanistan won over a science fiction film.

The Best Picture virtually always has some true life story behind it.

The Hurt Locker is an average film. It’s no better than say, Black Hawk Down.

AVATAR will go down as a classic whereas The Hurt Locker will not.

I also think the new voting system helped The Hurt Locker more too.

Well hello everyone!!!

Not really sure why i haven't joined up to this site before, but better late than never!

Firstly a short introduction seems the protocol......My name's Mark(32) and it seems like i'm the 2nd Welshman on the site, i'm from Wrexham, North Wales.

Like all you, i absolutely adore Jaws, AND its subsequent sequels. I've read the novel a dozen times, and also the novelisation of Jaws 2 at least 4 times! I recall seeing the first film on TV as a youngster and being hooked(no pun intended) ever since.
I do have a bizarre love for Jaws 3, that at times eclipses Jaws as my favourite film!! Thats probably sacrilege on here!!

Anyhoo, hopefully will get to chat to some of ya soon. Be good to converse with some die hard fans!

Ill be the first one to agree that Avatar isnt an original story (see Pocahontas or Dances with Wolves) and the messages was a bit over; doesnt change the fact that it was a solid movie that left (me at least) in awe at the theatre looking at it.

Movies are primarily a visual artform, and thats why I dont like people who just dismiss Avatar as just being a 'pretty' movie.

It reminded me of seeing Jurrasic Park as a kid in terms of spectacle.

I noticed Farrah missing as well and was disappointed. The Mrs. and I both shed at tear at seeing Brown, but I was also a little perturbed...they skipped Roy at the '08 A.W.'s, citing that he missed the "cut-off", but he died only nine days later into the year than Brown- I don't think there IS a cut-off, I just think there's an arbitrary decision made by the powers that be...

Anyway, re. Avatar, I agree there wasn't much about the story, main themes, and some of the characters that was Oscar-worthy, but I also thought the FX and sheer creativity involved more than made up for that fact. I'd put it in the same category as Star Wars- a groundbreaking film that failed to register with the Hollywood elite as the instant classic it was.

Rotten Tomatoes did a hilarious spot on WORST BEST MOVIE, and I wouldn't be surprised to see 'The Hurt Locker' in contention with 'How Green Was My Valley' in a few years- not that Avatar is anywhere near as timeless and great a film as Kane or The Maltese Falcon, but neither is, as Tom Hanks seemed to imply as he hastily read the winner of this year's "Best Picture", 'The Hurt Locker' on par with Casablanca. I think, as per usual, politics won the day.

Avatar was amazing special effects and that's it. The story was a bunch of cliches and the evil corporate dude character was the same as Paul Reiser's in Aliens. It did not deserve to win Best Picture in my book. I am glad Hurt Locker won and Jeff Bridges won as well. That being said, I wouldn't put Hurt Locker up there as one of the strongest winners.

Amazing how poorly Avatar did. The Hurt Locker was a great film, but for Avatar to be shut out of all the biggie categories . . . reminds me of a time, about 35 years ago, when the BIGGEST MOVIE OF ALL-TIME was similarly tossed aside, but . . . at least Cameron got nominated. :-)

What about Grizzly (1976)? I heard when they were making it they were going to call it CLAWS! I don't know why they changed it-maybe they feared a lawsuit, and then again a bear has a mouth that really shouldn't be ignored too!

Before I start the next one, I'll add one quick thing to the Up From the Depths, it's also known as "Monster Shark"

This next movie up for "review" is called Shark Zone. It's a pretty...entertaining film. The acting could be better, the plot more original but when a movie delievers you lines like "if the beaches aren't open next weekend it'll be more vicious around here than a shark attack" or "I know a bunch of people just lost their lives today, I'm not completely insensitive..." you know you got a goldie ;-p This flick even has it's own little boy screaming on the beach like Sean...Brody that is ;-) Then throw in a pack of giant great white sharks, a mayor ringing the dinner bell, a sunken wreck w/diamonds, the Russian mob and the most REDICULOUS dream shark attack sequence to date and viola! You have Shark Zone. ENJOY!

Hey there Deana! Welcome :-D Sounds like we watched the same viewing of Jaws. I read the book for JTR too and I actually liked the book. It gave the reasoning behind the shark being called to the island with the whole voodoo plot twist, not just the assumption it followed Ellen's plane (where's my rolly eyed emoticon when I need it LOL!) to the Bahamas.

Smikes, I think the majority of old timers think it's steaming elephant poo because of things like there's no Brody, no Hooper...just Ellen and a Mike that wasn't really Mike. He's a good actor and all, but we were handed Dennis Quaid as Mike...who was NOT a marine biologist. Plus they just left out too much of the plot, wanting us to take things on a leap of faith that there was some unknown, good reason for certain things that happened.

Meh, I've never been one for the awards shows....last time I watched one Metallica was still cool, but was robbed by Jethro Tull. But it sounds like I should've watched this one. That's sweet that they opened and closed the montage with the scariest movie ever. Other horror movies may've been creepier/eviler (not a word, I know) than Jaws...but Jaws made you scared in real life, on any beach fresh or salt water :-p and that's just a little part of its magic. I was never afraid Linda Blair would sit up on my bed and spit pea soup at me....but I was terrified "Jaws" would eat my arm off if I hung it off the bed so...yeah.

I'm with you 1000% on the Twilight thing Smikey,I sooooo do not like it at all! You Be thankful....be very thankful you don't have a teen yet. I had to take him to see the first 2 at theaters so far. He has the first on DVD-which is watched almost daily GAW! And oh joy...he gets a present on my birthday. I get to take him to go get the New Moon DVD :-/ Happy frickin' birthday to me OYE!

I keep thinking about this, but the only thing I can say I actually "disliked" was when Ellen and Martin were on the porch, she was defending the boys being in the boat till she saw the pics of great whites breaking into the side of a boat, then she yelled in her nails-on-a-chalk-board way "Did you hear your father? Out of the water NOW!" Her voice just grates me in that scene for some reason.

(The 'this is what happens when' just irritates me, because I want to hear the rest of the line LOL! I can't say that I dislike the scene because of it though)

Last night at The Oscars they decided to do a "tribute to horror movies" for some reason (probably to keep their ratings up); not only did it open with Chrissie's death scene, but it ended with the famous "open wide" shot of Brucie comin' up out of the water (which I thought was a real shark for the longest time).

It was a pretty awesome tribute, but sadly the coolness of it was somewhat diluted by an introduction from a couple of Twilight cast members and the inclusion of a scene from Twilight which absolutely did not belong in the montage as the series could not possibly be construed as "horror" by any stretch of the imagination. Aside from that though, I thought it was pretty killer- they managed to devote at least a second of screen time to most of my favorites and even a couple I was surprised to see on there (like Chucky and The Thing). Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin also did a hilarious bit based on "Paranormal Activity" which totally cracked my shit up (showed the camera on fast forward and them rolling around in bed together doing silly things).

Overall, I'd say it was a pretty good one this year, although I'm severely annoyed that Avatar didn't win Best Picture or even Best Director- the Academy seemed like it wanted to break the glass ceiling this year, which is fine, but they didn't have to do it against a movie which has raised the bar for visual excellence and box office returns. I have no problem with Jews and homosexuals, but they confuse the hell out of me sometimes.

I really hate the end of Jaws ......great film, but why did it have to end .

If I have to accept 2/3/4....I must, because we have the original.

As Brody & Hooper are paddling back to shore ,I wish the mike was still on.

" Hey ,you think with all this splashing, weel attract another of one of those things !"

Welcome, Deana! Thanks for sharing your story.

The elephant in the room with a lot of these newcomers seems to be Jaws the Revenge...for many years now there's been a concensus around here that it's a huge, steaming pile of pony loaf...and now in the past month alone I've encountered four people who actually ENJOY it! I just have to ask...what is good about it? I always thought it was one of the worst movies ever made...but I could be wrong.

Here, check out this link...this is the late Richard Jeni doing one of his funniest bits ever...the subject? JTR:

Hey there! My name is Deana and I am from Easton, PA. I am a 35 year old single mother of two beautiful girls and I absolutely love JAWS! The first time I saw JAWS, I believe I was about 6 years old. We were visiting with friends of my parents and they left us kids in the living room to watch TV. Well, JAWS was on. I was forbidden to watch the movie because my mother was afraid I would never sleep again. We never told them the movie was on and watched it with the volume down so they wouldn't hear it...pretty sneaky huh?

At six years old, I have to say...I wasn't scared. From that point on, I knew I found a movie that I loved. Every time the movie was on tv, I would watch it. Then came the sequels. I have to say I like the 2nd, the 3rd is so so, and the 4th (the Revenge) is good (I actually read this book). Nothing compares to the first though.

The reason I am on here today is because I recently bought the JAWS DVD for the 1st time~the 25th anniversary collector's edition. My youngest daughter is 3 years old...She is following in my footsteps. She absolutely loves this movie. She watches it about three times a day and I have no objection obviously.

I am here to check out the forums, and maybe get to chat with some other JAWS fan like myself. Thanks for taking the time to read this!!!

In reference to point #5,about the live shark w/yellow rope in mouth, he's talking about near the end after Bruce 1st hits the cage, remember the shark swims up close to the camera (it's a real gw and it has a more narrow face) and Hoop & cage in background.
