TSISW Behind the Scenes: Roy Scheider Narration Session

We recorded the narration for The Shark is Still Working from May 31 to June 1, 2006 in the Hamptons on Long Island. We used a studio (91 East) that Roy Scheider frequently used, as it was close to his home.

Erik and James arrived early on the 31st and began the laborious process of laying down the narration track with recording engineer Cynthia Daniels of 91 East. Roy was the consummate pro, suggesting changes to the narration script and not complaining when he had to do multiple takes of various lines. Having never been to Long Island, I had the bright idea to fly in from Denver to LaGuardia airport and to rent a car to drive out to Westhampton. Several annoying hours of traffic later, I finally arrived at the studio just as an exhausted Roy was finishing up for the night. Unlike the other TSISW guys, I hadn’t attended the initial interview with Roy, so I was desperately trying to get to the studio before the session was done. We had only scheduled the 31st with Roy, but he was nice enough to give us a few hours the next morning to finish up the narration track. The highlight of that day for me was when we took a break and sat down for lunch with Roy. Our lively lunch discussion included selling TSISW to Universal and Roy’s experience working with William Friedkin on the 1977 film Sorceror.
